THE CLARINET Historical Recordings Vol. 1
Within this podcast (to which I must admit to having got a little carried away in length – my apologies!) I have tried to reflect just a small sample of the recording treasures from our clarinet heritage which are included on this CD. Names of players and ensembles often confined to dedications on music covers or in books, in this recording you will have the chance to hear them. Representing some of the earliest recordings for the clarinet including a recording by Adolf Umbach dated 1898!
It is not surprising that the quality of some of the recordings are far from pure. But they are faithful to the players sound and at the time of restoring these recordings back in 1993, the sound engineer and I worked a fine balancing act between noise reduction while remaining true to the player. None the less, these recordings which are supported by a comprehensive booklet of notes and photographs, available in both digital and physical format.
I hope this recording will give you as much excitement in your voyage of discovery as it continues to do for me; to hear our clarinet ancestors of the past come to life!
