Clarinet Concerto, The Seasons, Autumn Sonata
Victoria Samek – clarinet and bass clarinet
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer
Premiere recording
This programme is devoted to the music of the eminent and Internationally renowned composer Thea Musgrave. Victoria Samek commissioned several works and has received several dedications as their lifelong friendship has flourished. ‘Autumn Sonata’ was her first commission and as a concerto, features the bass clarinet rarely seen in such a prominent setting. This haunting work inspired by the poetry of Georg Trakl, uses as an under-current the first movement of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. The Clarinet Concerto, first championed by Gervase de Peyer in a memorable Proms performance makes the most inspiring partner in a programme which is completed by a performance of Musgrave’s evocative The Seasons. All three works are conducted by the composer.
