The Delta Saxophone Quartet

Stephen Cottrell; Peter Whyman; Gareth Brady; Chris Caldwell

The Delta Saxophone Quartet, formed in 1984, is Britiain’s longest established saxophone chamber group, and has commissioned some of the World’s leading composers, including Gavin Bryars, Graham Fitkin and Michael Finnissy. The energy in this recording and the fastidious pression by the players is more than proves the saxophone quartet is a formidable rival to the string quartet.

  • Philip Glass – Mishima Premiere Recording for quartet
  • Steve Reich – New York Counterpoint Premiere Recording for quartet
  • Terry Riley – Tread on the Trail Premiere Recording for quartet
  • Gavin Bryars – Alaric 1 or 11 Delta Quartet commission
  • Michael Nyman – Songs for Tony

“The Delta Saxophone Quartet makes light of the extraordinary technical demands of this work and its forays into the extreme altissimo registers and control of multiphonics are most impressive”
