World Premiere Recordings by Lloyd, Howells & Hurlstone
This CD promotes the wonderful sound of clarinet, bassoon and piano in a programme which is both romantic in style and rich in sound. With composers including the only two clarinet works by William Hurlstone, who died tragically young, alongside World Premiere recordings of two rare works by Herbert Howells and the glorious Trio by Charles Harfrd Lloyd. This is a recording which has broad listening appeal for new audiences to the wind world and indeed for players considering performing this wonderful repertoire.
William Hurlstone Trio in G minor, Four Characteristic Pieces; Herbert Howells A Near Minuet, Minuet: Grace for a Fresh Egg; Charles Harford Lloyd Trio
Victoria Samek – clarinet Laurence Perkins – bassoon John Flinders – piano
Victoria Soames Samek and her colleagues should be commended for their assiduous scholarship and research in bringing this hitherto obscure music, some of which is still unpublished, to our attention. BBC Music Magazine
Soames Samek style is in the best English tradition, wonderfully supple and often downright breath-taking, Laurence Perkins similarly evokes English woodwind playing at its best supported by pianist John Flinders. International Record Review
