A few words from Xander Hunfeld
The composition ZERK makes use of variating textures and economic constraints of musical
means, by balanced distribution of several modes from Messiaen. With this technique the composer comments on minimal music.
In 1994 ZERK was commissioned by the Musica Nova Consort as part of the Carrousel Project, supported by the |Gaudeamus Foundation. Hunfeld used this assignment to reflect on a tragedy in his family. First by poems. Later these poems were deepened musically. His family lost contact with his eldest brother because of a stroke in 1988. Not much later two other brothers suddenly died of a cardiac arrest in 1993. Afterwards, his mother has never really come to terms with her sorrow. She passed away in 1996 eventually. We still do miss her badly.
